The Faith Still Remains - Short Story
The Faith Still Remains - Short Story
He had come to live in this big society of the metropolis. After arranging some stuff etc., the kitchen was also started. Around 10 in the morning, he came out of the society compound to buy vegetables.
A little away from the gate of the society, there were handcarts of those selling fruits, vegetables etc. on the road and sidewalk. He did not go to the hand carts, put a pile of vegetables on the sidewalk, went to the shop-like place covered with tarpaulin from above. Fresh vegetables were packed into makeshift racks, baskets and crates made of wooden pallets.
He sorted the vegetables of his choice and stood near the vegetable seller to weigh. A fat, dusky middle-aged vegetable vendor spread sacks on the pavement, sitting on it was very busy. Many customers were waiting for their turn holding vegetable baskets. The vegetable seller was quick to weigh the vegetables, put them in the bags of the customers or carry bags near them and was being caught. As fast as he was weighing the vegetables, he was also doing the transaction of money while calculating the speed.
When his turn came, after weighing the vegetables, he put his hand in his pocket to give money. He had only three hundred rupees, while the bill had become three and a half hundred.
"brother ! Reduce vegetables by fifty rupees.
"Why babu ji... what happened?" The vegetable man asked.
“I have brought less money from home. Only three C rupees are with you... You take out vegetables worth fifty rupees."
"Oh babuji! Never mind... you take all the vegetables. Give the outstanding money tomorrow." The vegetable seller said with an open mind, smiling.
He met the vegetable seller for the first time today. Neither the vegetable seller, nor did they recognize each other. He was somewhat surprised by the trust of the vegetable seller in him. He was astonished by such kindness in the metropolis without any recognition.
Seeing such faith of the vegetable seller on himself, he felt that the world is not so bad.
